We often see lists of things that Christians are doing wrong, but what about the things Christians are doing right? Here are 4 things that I think Christians get right but need to practice more.
1. Reaching out beyond the church walls.
I think one of the most important things we can learn from Jesus as he walked this earth is that he didn’t just go around with the religious people. We don’t read about how Jesus only helped those people who were in the temples. We see that he went places and reached out to people that broke the religious mold. How much of an impact would Jesus have made if he only took time for the religious people? We are called to grow the Kingdom of God. How are we going to do that if we stay in our comfortable church pew? You may be wondering what you can do so I challenge you to invite 3 people to church this week.
2. Support and be an active part of your community.
One of the best ways to spread the love of Christ is to show that love through your actions. Get out and support your community. Volunteer at the food bank. Support the rehabilitation centers. Donate to your church’s youth group. There is no better way to witness to the broken and hurt than to go to where they are.
3. Encourage your brothers and sisters in Christ.
If you’ve been a Christian for very long, then you know that there are times in our lives when the struggles come. Sometimes the only thing that a person needs to know in those valleys is that someone cares and understands. It’s never been easier to encourage someone. Is there someone that you haven’t seen in church for a couple weeks? Is someone going through a breakup? Is someone you know sick? Send them a card. Shoot them a text message. Reach out to them on Facebook. There is no greater feeling than to know that someone cares and is praying for you.
4. Practice agape love.
Agape love is love at it’s ultimate. Agape is not the love that brothers share or that a husband and wife share, is the most self-sacrificing love. Agape is love in action. We see the best example of agape when Jesus died on the cross for us. Love without conditions. Love without terms. Love, despite the love or lack of love you are shown. Love like Christ. Practice it. Live it.
No one is expected to be perfect. Do I do these 4 things without fail? Not even close. All I can do is strive to be the best Christian I can be every day. There are days that I feel like I haven’t done anything for the growth of God’s kingdom, but I can keep trying. I hope that you will reflect on these four points and think about how you can add them to your daily routine. I’ll be praying for you and I ask that you pray for me as we go out to spread God’s love.
